A recruiter talking about interview preparation? Yes, another speech about the importance of preparing, but before closing this article, let me explain why it could really make a difference.
Preparing for an interview may seem simple, but it’s easy to forget the basics and overlook essential rules. We’ve all been in a situation where a lack of preparation has caused us to stumble over an unexpected question or prevented us from presenting our best side.
At Harnham, our goal is to prepare you as thoroughly as possible for your interviews. We take the time to organize video conferences and phone calls, and to provide you with all the tools you need to maximize your chances of success during this crucial stage.
Guillian Eller , Business Manager at Harnham , gives us some tips to ace your interview. Here are what he considers the most important points:
- Be punctual and well-prepared: Whether the interview is in person or via video conference, be on time and dressed professionally. Remember that even via video conference, appearance matters, and it’s important to maintain the same standards as for a traditional interview.
- Conduct thorough research on the company: There’s a huge difference between those who do the bare minimum and those who really dig deep. Check the company’s and the manager’s LinkedIn profiles, identify commonalities, look at recent news, funding rounds, competitors, etc. This information demonstrates that you’re serious and genuinely interested in the opportunity.
- Understand the company’s challenges: Market yourself in relation to the specific challenges and issues facing the company. For example, if the company is experiencing rapid growth, and you have experience in such an environment, highlight this to show that you are the ideal person to meet this challenge.
- Use a recruiter to prepare: An external recruiter can be a valuable asset. At Harnham, we invest time to prepare you as thoroughly as possible and share feedback from previous candidates, manager expectations, and our insights into the interview process and the role, ensuring you are as prepared as possible.
- Analyze the job description: Identify the key responsibilities and relate them to your own experience. The manager needs to feel confident that you are capable of taking over the role. Highlight similar projects you have completed and the results you achieved.
- Practice active listening: During the interview, listen carefully to what the manager emphasizes and adapt your responses to their expectations. Demonstrate that you are aligned with the company’s needs.
- Don’t underestimate the importance of soft skills: From the very first minutes of the interview, project positive energy and smile. Even though it’s said not to judge based on the first two minutes, they can often set the tone for the rest of the conversation.
- Prepare questions for the end of the interview: Having questions to ask shows that you are interested and have thought about the opportunity. Too often, candidates neglect this part, leaving managers wondering if they are truly interested in the position.
- Consider your salary expectations: The question of salary can come up at any time. Be prepared with a realistic range. Avoid bidding wars, as this can be perceived negatively. In today’s data market, the salary gap is around 7 to 8%. Remember to mention the aspects that are crucial to you during your discussions with the manager or the HR department.
By following these tips, you will significantly increase your chances of succeeding in your interviews and landing the job you want. Preparation is key to success, so don’t neglect it!
